JSON Formatter and Validator Online: Format, Fix, and Minify JSON

Make a one-line API response readable, find why a JSON parser failed, or create a compact payload. Learn how to format JSON online, validate syntax, fix common errors, and choose the right tool for JSON, JSONL, XML, and related tasks.

Use the free Perkability JSON formatter and validator to paste JSON, check whether it parses, and switch between readable formatting and minified output. The page describes the tool as browser-based. Remove passwords, access tokens, private customer records, and other secrets before pasting data into any online utility.

What does a JSON formatter do?

JSON (JavaScript Object Notation) is a text format for exchanging structured data. It represents strings, numbers, booleans, null, arrays, and objects. Objects hold name and value pairs; arrays hold ordered lists. JSON is common in API responses, configuration files, and application data.

A JSON formatter, beautifier, or prettifier adds indentation and line breaks so nested data is easier to scan. A JSON validator checks syntax. A JSON parser reads valid JSON into a value a program can use. A JSON minifier removes optional whitespace to make valid JSON more compact. These related tasks are not identical.

{"user":{"name":"Mina","active":true},"roles":["editor","author"]}

Formatted, the same value is easier to inspect:

{n  "user": {n    "name": "Mina",n    "active": truen  },n  "roles": ["editor", "author"]n}

How to format and validate JSON online

  1. Open the JSON Formatter.
  2. Paste the complete JSON text into the input.
  3. Choose the format or validation action and read any syntax message.
  4. Copy the readable result, or minify it when you need compact output.

This is useful for a one-line API response, a hard-to-review configuration file, or a request body that needs checking before a test. Formatting changes whitespace; it does not prove that the values are correct for your application.

Common JSON syntax errors

IssueInvalidCorrection
Single quotes{'name':'Mina'}{"name":"Mina"}
Unquoted property{name:"Mina"}{"name":"Mina"}
Trailing comma{"active":true,}{"active":true}
Missing comma{"city":"Pune" "active":true}{"city":"Pune","active":true}
Comment{"mode":"test" // comment}Remove it or use a format that supports comments.
Unclosed string or bracket{"message":"hello}Close the string and all open objects and arrays.

Standard JSON uses double-quoted strings and property names. It does not allow comments or trailing commas. That is why a JavaScript object literal may work in code but fail with a strict JSON parser. See the IETF JSON standard.

JSON versus JSONL, XML, and YAML

A standard JSON document contains one JSON value. JSON Lines (JSONL or NDJSON) contains one JSON value per line, often one record per line. A standard parser may reject a multi-line JSONL file because the whole file is not one JSON text. Check that a tool explicitly supports JSONL before using it for a log or export.

XML and YAML have different syntax. An XML viewer or XML beautifier handles tags and attributes; a YAML formatter handles indentation-based YAML. An XML-to-JSON converter transforms data between formats, and the result still needs validation. Renaming an XML or YAML file to .json does not convert it.

JSON stringifyIn JavaScript, JSON.stringify() serializes a value as JSON text; JSON.parse() reads valid JSON text back.

Can you use an online formatter for private data?

Check the privacy explanation before pasting sensitive material. Perkability's JSON page describes browser-based processing; still, remove credentials and personal information when possible. For confidential or regulated data, use an approved local or internal tool.

Frequently asked questions

Is a JSON formatter the same as a validator?

No. A formatter improves readability. A validator checks syntax. Many tools do both by parsing input before formatting.

Why does JSON.parse reject my data?

Common causes include single quotes, unquoted property names, trailing commas, comments, missing commas, and unfinished strings or brackets.

What is the difference between JSON and JSONL?

JSON is one serialized value. JSONL stores one JSON value on each line, often for logs or records. Use a tool that explicitly supports JSONL.

Can a formatter compare two files?

Only if it includes a diff feature. Formatting one input does not show what changed between two files.
